People ask for a timetable of the the yoga of trekking walkabout retreat. This is  my reply:

WHITEMEDICINEYOGA WALKABOUT ADVENTURE BASIC STRUCTURE OF DAYS

When trekking in the desert with camels our camels become the most important part of our nomadic retreat so a fair percentage of the walkabout is the yoga of cameleering.

These amazing sentient beings carry our water, food and least importantly our small amount of possessions. They are our lifeline. As you will often hear Russ say during our adventure “It’s all about the camels”

On most treks you will be drawn to one particular camel and have already been writing to that camel from the camel profiles on www.whitemedicineyoga.com. By now you have sent your camel a profile of yourself.

The yoga of trekking and cameleering go hand in hand as we use active awareness meditations during our day. Handling the camels requires that we are present. Here is a basic outline of the days on the walkabout.

DAY ONE

  • 10:00 am Meet at Adelaide airport  and depart shortly after

  • 4 pm Arrive Almerta Station. We will stop once or twice for fuel and food. It’s a very steady trip to arrive before wild things get on the road.

  • Set up camp and camel packs

  • Campfire dinner. Camp protocol and safety and emergency procedures.

DAY TWO.

  • Sunrise at camel camp. Fire and breakfast.

  • 7:30ish.  Induction into camel handling, how to distribute packs, trekking schedule.

  • Collect and meet the camels. You may get assigned your camel right here. Each trek varies. But you will be assigned a camel.

  • Demonstration and training on saddling and packing camel string.

  • 10:30-11 ish Leave the camel camp.Trek.

  • 1:30 -2 ish  Lunch-set up for lunch.  (good idea to have some personal snacks)

  • 2:30-3 ish trek to evening campsite

  • 5:00 Unpack camels. Gather firewood, set up campsite kitchen and personal camp with swag

  • Sunset yoga and Agni hotra ritual. Cooking Eating Talking.  Sleep under stars

DAY 3

  • Sunrise agni hotra and yoga

  • 7 am Pack personal swags, packs-eat breakfast.

  • Shepherd your camel

  • 8:30 -9  Gather camels into string-pack as a team

  • Disembark when finished depending upon camels, weather etc

  • 1:30 -2 ish Lunch routine

  • And so on.

We will reach Lake Torrens about 2 days in trekking

The schedule there is Yoga on the Lake, the experience of the Lake itself-evening meditation on the lake.

There will be a morning and evening heart bonding meditation with your camel. That comes when the time is right.

Trekking in silence will also be part of the routine but as it comes into play with how the group is forming and storming and transforming.

Kitchen and cooking duty will go in pairs throughout the trek. Yoga postures will be to iron out the trekking stiffness, but there are sunrise and sunset rituals and chanting.

Daily personal contemplations.

Journaling.

Using a GPS and compass to navigate-this is for personal awareness as Russ will be making certain we are on track. Most of the trekking is done off made roads.

A good deal of time is spent in making certain that our animals are “right”

There will be plenty of personal time as well-especially while shepherding.

Any questions on our daily routine please let me know.

DAY 6

  • Lunch at the camel camp.

  • Release the camels

  • Stow gear, strip bedding from swags

  • Final campfire BBQ celebration

  • Sleep

DAY 7

  • SunRise and shine departing soon after for Adelaide and perhaps a side trip into the Flinders. Every group is different.

I also am asked how many km per day. We walk at camel speed around 5 Km per hour. Weather decides as well. There is stopping to adjust packs and ropes; maybe settle the string down. You will be carrying a light pack with water and personal essentials. Depending on the terrain and the weather, the group and the camels we may walk between 12 and 20 km per day. Again every group is different.

The trekking is about comuning with the desert and finding a connection to self that the wilderness provides. They are no ribbons or tropheys for speed or distance but rather a richer texture to your life. The trek will be challenging enough for you and not so challenging that you are overwhelmed.

some days will be trekking in silence.
